Alamosa (Spanish word for cottonwood grove) is a city of over 8,000 inhabitants in the San Luis Valley, south-central Colorado, USA. Founded in 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Alamosa is a retail hub for the San Luis Valley, situated approximately 121 mi / 195 km southwest of Pueblo and 140 mi / 225 km north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The city is nestled along the Rio Grande River at an elevation of 7,500 ft and is surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountains. The growth of the railroads in 1878 was an important factor for the founding of this now very popular destination.
Attractions and events in Alamosa
The amazing Great sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is an area of more than 30 square miles of dune fields that stretch across the landscape. Tourists from all over the world come to visit Alamosa just to build and play in this most unusual playground.
You could also decide to step back in time to the 1800s and ride on the historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic railroad trip from Antonito to Chama. It is a most beautiful and scenic train journey which together with being driven by a steam-powered train gives the journey a really nostalgic feel.
A visit to Alamosa would not be complete without a visit or even a stay at the Inn of the Rio Grande which is the only hotel Waterpark in Alamosa. It has three pools, a splash pool, a recreation pool, a kiddie pool and a thrilling 155 foot long giant water slide!
One more attraction worth mentioning is the fantastic and unusual Gator Farm in Alamosa. There are over 400 Alligators soaking in natural hot spring waters that you can observe at close quarters, but beware!
