Dubai’s buildings reflect the state’s achievement in concentrating huge wealth to a small number of people and attracting those that like an unambiguous and confident statement of opulence. Without any history the ruling family clearly believes that it can buy the world’s attention and has managed to do so.
Dubai also hosts sporting events such as Grand Prix and tennis tournaments, cricket and football.
Dubbed the shopping capital of the Middle East, Dubai has the largest shopping mall in the world, the Dubai Mall, and 70 other malls. Most shoppers come from the Arab world but many come from Europe to experience the modern version of the souk writ very large indeed.
