Ukraine, being the second largest country in Europe, has a history dating back earlier than the 1100’s. There have been many different religions and countries that have had control and power throughout the years. The Ukrainian people have had countless challenges trying to uphold their religious beliefs and way of life which are in vast contrast to the Polish, Austrians and Russians who have had control of the country for most of the time. Their practice of learning Ukrainian and being involved in their own cultural and literary activities was severely restricted and even banned whilst under the control of the Russian Tsars.
The country is a land of wide, fertile agricultural plains, with large areas of heavy industry in the east. To the north of the country lies Kiev, the capital and largest city in the country, it is also the oldest city in Europe. Kiev is known as the center of Ukrainian culture with over 2.5 million inhabitants. Here also lie some of the country’s most historic buildings and monuments, for example the golden domed cathedral of St. Sophia which dates back to 1046. Ukraine regained its independence in 1991 due to the collapse of the Soviet Union caused by failure of the Soviet political and economic system and nationalism spreading throughout. The country is now a republic with a president and prime minister who are elected for a term of five years.
Numerous catastrophic disasters have occurred in the country in the past, which have caused suffering to many. In 1932-33 whilst Stalin was head of the USSR and the former was in control of the country, an agricultural collectivisation programme was enforced which brought famine and death to millions. In 1986 an infamous accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station contaminated huge areas of land in the country and neighbouring countries which brought suffering to millions and is still evident.
