Ukraine, being the second largest country in Europe, has a history dating back earlier than the 1100’s. Ukraine regained its independence in 1991 due to the collapse of the Soviet Union caused by failure of the Soviet political and economic system and nationalism spreading throughout. The country is now a republic with a president and prime minister who are elected for a term of five years.
