For two reasons Presernov Square lies at the very heart of the city. Historically, because it actually has three river crossings centred here and spiritually because it has the landmark of the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. From this point you can also take a tourist train up to the all-pervading Ljubljana Castle from which you can savour the view of the city and the distant surrounding mountains. After having been carefully renovated, the castle is now a major tourist attraction that hosts many different cultural events.
Gornji trg, Mestni trg and Stari trg are the three old town connecting squares that are situated around the base of the castle hill. You can wander around these quaint areas and come across some fine baroque and medieval buildings that are intermingled with the popular bars, cafes and restaurants that provide the many visitors and tourists with their much needed refreshments.
Those who love avant-garde art should make their way to the Museum of Modern Art where you will find a fantastic collection of sculptures and paintings that portray this very unique style. The elegant Auersperg Palace houses the impressive City Museum and has many displays, children’s workshops, a congress hall and cafes to relax in after a hard day out! The main emphasis is on the evolution of the city, its citizens, the Auersperg family and local roman discoveries. Another interesting place to discover is the Architectural Museum Plečnik Collection which is housed in Trnovo house and is a must for Plečnik fans the world over.
After a heavy rain or downpour the Ljubljana River can turn into quite a lively rush of water and there are many boat tours that leave from the square that will take you on a guided tour of the area.
