Bucharest is not only the capital city of Romania, but is also the industrial, cultural, and financial centre of the whole country.
Bucharest has had a very tumultuous past, which has directly influenced the eclectic architecture which can be seen throughout the city. Many old buildings were torn down during the communist rule to make way for new box like utilitarian structures. Perhaps the most prominent of these buildings is the Palace of the Parliament, which was built in the 1980s during the reign of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Currently it is the largest building in Europe and the second-largest in the world. The Palace houses the Romanian Parliament, as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art and also has one of the largest convention centres in the world. However not everything was lost, and there are still prime examples of medieval, neoclassical and art nouveau buildings that are left in the old centre that are still standing proud amongst the other more modern structures.

Bucharest also contains several other large and impressive parks and gardens. The large public Herastrau Park and the associated Botanical Garden is situated in the North of the city and is also the venue for the Village Museum.
There are also other cultural venues that are dotted around the city that are worth visiting, such as the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of the Romanian Peasant, the National History Museum and the Military Museum.
There are a number of cultural festivals that are held in Bucharest throughout the year. Some like the National Opera organises the International Opera Festival in May and June and the Romanian Athenaeum Society hosts the George Enescu Festival at various locations throughout the city in September.
One of the numerous landmarks and monuments that Bucharest has is the well known Arcul de Triumf (The Triumphal Arch), which was built in its current form in 1935 and modelled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This was originally built for the victorious troops to march underneath it after Romania gained its independence.
Bucharest has a temperate continental climate which is partly due to its position on the Romanian Plain, this sometimes causes the city's winters to become rather windy.
Bucharest has an extensive public transport system which is the largest in Romania and one of the largest in Europe. The Bucharest Metro organisation consists of buses, trams, trolleybuses, and a light rail system that provides for all the public needs.
