Qatar is part of the huge Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East, and has Dubai on its eastern side and Bahrain to the west. The very long and extremely hot summers last from May to September and are usually characterized by their dryness and humidity. In the Winter the temperatures are usually more bearable with the odd exception of sometimes falling as low as 5 °C. Much of the country is covered in sand and consists of mostly low barren plains. To the southeast lies the spectacular Khor al Adaid, which is known to English speakers as the Inland Sea and is an area of rolling sand dunes that surround an inlet of the Persian Gulf.
An interesting place to go to is Al Zubarah Fort which was built in 1936 and is already a popular Heritage Site that’s well worth travelling to. Until relatively recently, it was still used as a police post with prisoners being held in the top rooms of the towers. Although there are a number of other settlements and ruins in the area, this is the most complete and best known, having been pictured many a times for postcards and books.
