If you are looking for flights to Manila and plan to use the Internet to search for flights then you need a bit of background information before you book.
History of Manila
The Spanish, British, Japanese and Americans all ruled the Philippines before it won its independence. All these cultures and many more have left their mark culturally, ethnically and linguistically.
Manila is the capital of the Philippines and the second largest behind the former capital Quezon City.
After WWII the Americans liberated the country from the Japanese and established a democratic state. Japanese occupation during World War II led to the early withdrawal of American troops and the famous return of General MacArthur in 1944. The subsequent battle for the city saw 100,000 citizens massacred and the city totally destroyed. In 1946 the United States kept its pre-war promise and independence for the Philippines was granted.
Imelda Marcos is one of Manila’s most famous residents; notorious for being the wife of a dictator and her collection of thousands of pairs of shoes.
Climate of Manila
Situated wholly in the tropics Manila’s daytime temperature remains around 30C all year round! But the downside is the rainy season which lasts from June until December and very high humidity.
What to see in Manila
As a centre of commerce and government the downtown area reflects indigenous, Chinese, Spanish and other Western cultures in its architecture and attractions. The city is a collection of conurbations without much city planning in evidence.
You may want to head for Rizal Park which contains beautiful Chinese and Japanese gardens and the Philippines National Museum and Library; there is also a butterfly pavilion, a planetarium and orchid house.
