Chongqing is a major city in central-western China with a registered population of over 30 million. It sits at the confluence of the Yagtze abd Jialing rivers. The city has been rapidly urbanising since it became independent from Sichuan province in 1997.
Chongqing has a mixture of newly built modern commercial skyscrapers and and an ancient one thousand year old town which is situated in the Shapingba district. This area, is otherwise known as Small Chongqing, was at one time an important source of chinaware products and used to be a busy commercial dock during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. Now tourists and visitors throng to the steep and narrow pedestrian streets in search of handicrafts, gifts, and fine porcelain items.
Other attractions in this wonderful city are the natural bridges and Furong Cave in Wulong which are listed as a World natural Heritage site and the ancient hillside Fishing Town which is surrounded by water on three sides. This State Council designated national cultural and historical site, is located about five kilometers east of Hechuan, Chongqing. It contains many important historical buildings such as a naval wharf, watch towers, and a fortification with built-in cannons.
Chongqing also has a modern and well stocked zoo exhibiting many national and regional animals, including the Giant Panda and the rare South China Tiger.
Chongqing weather and climate conditions
Chongqing summers are among the hottest in China with temperatures reaching as high as 47° Centigrade. However the cold wind that’s prevalent in that region helps to keep the atmosphere more bearable for locals and tourists. Unfortunately during the spring and winter period Chongqing suffers from a dense fog and it is these conditions that have given it the infamous nickname of “the Fog Capital”. It did however help Chongqing once, when it protected the city from the Imperial Japanese Army during World War 2!
