For a quiet retreat try going to the Beihai or Jingshan Park. The former one has a lake that covers almost half of the entire park and is a popular place in the winter for skating and in the summer for boating trips. The second park contains coal Hill, which affords incredible views over the golden rooftops of the imperial buildings in the Forbidden City.
