Akulivik is an Inuit village of approx 500 inhabitants in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, Canada. It is located on a peninsula that juts south-westerly into Hudson Bay close to the Island of Cape Smith (Qikirtajuaq), approx 62 mi / 100 km north of Puvirnituq.
The Akulivik community cannot be reached by road and is only accessible by air. Some of the attractions in Akulivik is Smith Island where in the spring, thousands of migratory Canada and snow geese can be observed in their natural habitat. Also, there is the rare opportunity to examine and even study the various natural wildlife that are prevalent and unique to the Akulivik area. One big advantage in Akulivik is that it is a very small community, which makes it easier to make contact with the Inuits who are willing to accompany travellers who wish to discover the surrounding area.
Akulivik climate conditions
The climate and weather conditions in Akulivik are subject to extremes: it is not rare, in the space of one summer, to go from blinding sunlight to snow flurries or rain showers. Akulivik can suffer from extreme strong winds that are not hampered by any natural tree barriers. The environment's ruggedness corresponds to the average winter temperature of -24° C and the average temperature of 12° C during the few warm days of the brief Arctic summer.
