Kabul International Airport commonly referred to as KAIA. is located 16 Km from the centre of Kabul. At first the airport was only used by the military but after the removal of UN sanctions, in early 2002, it was finally allowed to be used for civilian airlines. Interestingly after September 11th, Kabul airport was bombed by the US and it was only in 2006 with the assistance of Japan that they rebuilt it to include a modern 35 million dollar terminal intended for international flights as well.. The new Kabul airport was officially opened to overseas flights on 2 June 2009 and the existing terminal has been extensively refurbished and is now currently being used for domestic flights.
